Norbert Wiener
1894-1964

Norbert Wiener was an American pure and applied mathematician. He was a pioneer in the study of stochastic and noise processes, contributing work relevant to electronic engineering, electronic communication, and control systems.  He is generally known as the "father of cyborgs". Wiener was the originator of the term cybernetics and part of a group of scientists who originated the field. As used in robotics, it is science of communications and control in animals and machines. He took the word from the Greek word for steersman.

He was also an MIT mathematician, science fiction author, and designer of an early chess-playing robot.

Wiener is the founder of cybernetics, a field that formalizes the notion of feedback, with many implications for engineering, systems control, computer science, biology, philosophy, and the organization of society.
